Peek at the Week

Week of November 18th-22nd

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.  We will begin the week with completing the “What’s my Rule” routine to analyze patterns. On Tuesday, the students will be assessed on concepts taught on Unit 2.  Concepts assessed include drawing arrays, factors and multiples, identifying area, converting hours to minutes, multiplicative comparison problems, identifying right angles, identifying quadrilateral properties, symmetry, completing a “What’s My Rule?” problem, solving a multi-step word problem, and finding the area of a rectilinear figure.  On Thursday, the students will take the Unit 2 Cumulative Assessment. The students will be assessed on place value, addition, subtraction, perimeter, and word problems. Please let me know if you would like me to practice any math skills with your fourth grader.

Writing: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

This week’s opinion topic is if students should choose their own seats in class.  We will focus on writing an introduction, three body paragraphs with reasons and explanations, and ending with a conclusion.  Ask your fourth grader to identify their opinion regarding sitting where they want in class.

Reading: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text.

The biography genre will begin in guided reading groups.  While working in groups, students will use context clues to identify unfamiliar words.
