Peek at the Week

Week of May 20th-24th

Writing: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

The students will begin the final draft of their fractured Greek Myth.  They will be graded on the plot of their story, the exposition, word choice, dialogue, resolution, and conventions.  Ask your fourth grader which myth they are choosing to fracture.

Reading: Determine a theme of a story, drama or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

In addition to writing Greek myths, the fourth graders will be reading a variety of Greek myths.  As they are reading the Greek Myth, they will identify the theme of the text. For homework, every fourth grader will have to research the Greek god or goddess of his or her choice.  Every fourth grader received a sheet to complete. On the front of the sheet they will have to answer questions about the Greek god or goddess. On the back of the sheet, they will have to create their own story about this god or goddess.  This research report is due on Friday, May 31st. In class, the fourth grader will be reading different Greek myths and will be identifying the theme of the myth. A theme can be identified as a lesson learned through the context of the story.

Math: Geometric measurement; understand concepts of angle and measure angles.

The fourth graders will begin the week with using what they know about the angle measure of a square to identify the angle measure of other polygons.  They will also identify line symmetry. Because of Tuesday’s Rockfest, there will be no formal math lesson or homework on Tuesday. Last Wednesday, the students were given back their Unit 7 Assessments.  Every fourth grader has an opportunity to revise his or her math test to make up half the points on the original test. To receive the credit, all revised tests must be brought back to school before Friday, May 24th.
