Room 207

Peek at the Week

Week of May 13th-17th

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

On Tuesday, the students will take the Unit 7 Assessment.  They will be tested on multiplying whole numbers by fractions, identifying multiples of unit fractions, converting gallons, quarts, and pints, solving multi-step word problems, converting pounds to ounces, identifying patterns, and plotting data on a line plot.  We will begin Unit 8 on Wednesday. The students will once again work on solving multi-step word problems. They will also identify angle measure using what they already know about angle measure.

Writing:  Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

This week, the fourth graders will be fracturing the Greek Myth of Perseus.  As they are reading, they will be writing a luring lead in their exposition, they will use descriptive words, they will include dialogue to show how a character responds to a situation, and they will end their writing with an unforgettable ending.  Please ask your fourth grader how he or she is fracturing the myth of Perseus.

Reading: Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems.

To end our poetry unit, every fourth grader is assigned a partner and a poetry anthology to read.  As they are reading the poetry anthology, they will also be answering questions pertaining to the figurative language, theme, rhyme scheme, and language of the poems in the poetry anthology.  Because we are done with the reading book, there will be no Tic Tac Toe Assignments for the remainder of the school year. For homework this week, every fourth grader will pick a poem to share with their classmates on Friday, May 17th.  Before they share their poem with the class, they will have to answer questions about it for homework. On Monday, the students brought the form home to complete. The students can find a poem from the Internet or from an anthology. The sheets will be due on Friday, May 17th.  The sheet can also be found on my blog.
