Peek at the Week

Week of March 25th-29th


Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.  

As the students are reading their real life mysteries, they will summarize the text.  The reader knows that the summary includes the who, what, where, why, and when of the text.  The reader also knows that a good summary should be approximately three-five sentences. Because the students have read all of the stories in the Journeys book, they are due back at school this week.  In return for the Journey’s book, they will receive a Path to Discovery book. Next week, the students will receive activities to complete for the stories in the book. Therefore, there will be no formal reading assigned this week.  


Writing: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.  

The students will continue to respond to the prompt that they previously received.  Last week, the writers read a story about a girl who had wacky shoes that would not come off of her feet. The students have to rewrite the story with themselves as the first person narrator with shoes that would not come off of their feet.  They will be graded on responding to the prompt, using descriptive verbs in the past tense, using appropriate paragraph breaks, beginning sentences in a variety of ways, using dialogue to show how a character responds to a situation, and conventions.  Final drafts are due before Friday.


Math: Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement.

This week students will explore angles. They will create their own angle measurer and will then learn to measure angles more accurately with a protractor. Later in the week they will learn that two angles side by side can be added in order to get the measure of their combined angle. We will then end the week by going back to practice fractions and mixed numbers.
