Peek at the Week

Week of December 17th-21st

Writing: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

The fourth grade writers will spend the week publishing and binding their books.  The focus of the lessons will be on using text features, utilizing the correct mechanics, and dividing their writing into appropriate sections.  All parents are invited to our publishing party which will be held on Friday, December 21st at 3PM. At the party, the fourth grade authors will be sharing their books.

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

We will begin the week with solving an open response problem.  In this problems, the fourth graders will use place value to determine how much money (in bills) can fit into a specific box.  On Tuesday, the students will evaluate student work and revise their own open response. The students will also be introduced to partial product multiplication and will be converting kilograms to grams.

Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

The fourth graders will continue to read biographies.  In guided reading groups, they will identify the main idea of the text.  The students have also been introduced to the Wax Museum project. On Thursday, January 31st, the Ray School cafeteria will be transformed into the Fourth Grade Wax Museum.  For this wax museum, every fourth grader needs to pick a biography to read. They need to become an expert about their biography and dress as the person that they are reading about in the book.  Every fourth grader needs to bring in his or her biography to school on or before Monday, January 7th. The students will be given time to read the biography in class and will be practicing comprehension strategies with the book during the month of January.  If your fourth grader needs help picking a biography, the teacher will help him or her. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about this 2nd quarter project.

Spelling Bee

The Ray School Spelling Bee will be held on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019.  Every class needs to pick two representatives to compete in the Bee. The Room 207 bee will be held on Tuesday, January 8th.  Every interested fourth grader received a spelling study list to practice over break. This is an optional activity.
