Peek at the Week

Week of December 3rd-7th

Writing: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

During the month of December, the fourth grade writers will be writing informational books about the topic of their choice.  Different than the explanatory writing that they wrote in October, they will spend the month of December teaching the reader information about a topic that they know a lot of facts about.  We will begin the month, with brainstorming everything that they know about the topic. From there, they will create an outline to organize their ideas. By the end of the month, every fourth grade writer will have a published book to take home.  Ask your fourth grader what topic he or she is writing their book about.

Math: Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions.

The students will take the Unit 3 Assessment on Thursday.  Topics that will be assessed include word problems with fractions, the equivalent fraction rule, comparing fractions, writing fractions on a number line, converting fractions to decimals, comparing decimals, converting centimeters to millimeters, and using three different strategies to compare fractions.  On Friday, the students will take the open response test. While taking this assessment, the students will have to explain how to compare fractions using different strategies. Please let us know if there are any specific skills that you would like us to practice with your fourth grader.

Reading: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and drawing inferences from the text.

Throughout the week, the fourth graders will be making inferences in the text.  In guided reading books, they will use explicit text evidence and their own schema, or background knowledge, to make an inference.  Ask your fourth grader who they are reading about in their biography.
