Peek at the Week

Week of November 26th-30th

Reading: Describe the overall structure (chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

Throughout the quarter, the readers will be identifying how the structure of a fiction story is different than informational text.  This week’s reading skill focuses on cause and effect. In guided reading groups, the readers will be determining the cause and effect of specific events.

Writing: Write an opinion piece on a topic or text, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
This week students will be writing their final draft of their opinion writing. Their topic is if cell phones should be allowed in school. Talk with your student at home about their opinion on this topic.

Mathematics: Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100.

This week students are being introduced to the relationship between fractions and decimals. They will start by looking at fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, since these are the easiest to convert from fractions to decimals. Students will also use base-10 blocks to help them explore decimals. Talk with your child about where we see decimals in real life. Money is a great example of this.
