Peek at the Week

Week of January 8th-12th

Writing: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

Our writing genre of the month is research writing.  Every fourth grader will pick a topic or person pertaining to African-American history to research.  We will begin the week by generating prior knowledge about African-American history.  From there, the fourth grader will ask questions about what he or she wants to know.  The writer will then pick a topic or person to research.  After every fourth grader has a topic, he or she will then begin the research.  To aid research, mini-lessons will focus on using reliable websites, writing a bibliography in correct APA format, and paraphrasing vs. plagiarism.  The students will be taught the importance of why not to plagiarize.  Students are invited to research their topic at home.  They also can bring in books about their topic to assist them with their research.

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

Lessons in Unit Four continue to focus on multiplication.  We will begin the week with solving multi-step multiplication problems.  The fourth graders will also continue to practice partial products multiplication.  On Wednesday, the fourth graders will do this through the game Multiplication Wrestling. The fourth graders will be introduced to the term rectilinear figure, a shape composed of adjacent rectangles.  The students will be taught how to find the area and perimeter of a rectilinear figure.

Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

Throughout the week, guided reading groups will focus on supporting details.  The reader will identify the main idea of the text, use details to support the main idea, and explain how the details support the main idea.  Biography book reports are due on Thursday, January 11th.  All students should bring their biography to school on Tuesday, January 16th.  Next week, we will begin to create our monologue for the wax museum.  The Fourth Grade Wax Museum will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 9AM.  All are invited to attend!

Spelling Bee

The Ray School Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, January 11th at 2PM.  To determine the two representatives from Room 207, we will have a class spelling bee on Tuesday, January 9th.  Students had the option of taking home a study guide over break.
