Peek at the Week

Week of November 27th-December 1st

Reading: Describe the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

As the students continue to read biographies, they will focus on cause and effect.  Guided reading group conversations will question the student on identifying the effect of a particular event that happened to the subject of the reader’s book.  At home, focus on the cause and effect of your fourth grader’s independent book. Ask your fourth grader both the cause and effect of certain events.  Informational book reports are due on Thursday, November 30th.  Forms can be found on the blog.  Every fourth grader is required to report on a book of the biography, autobiography, or informational genre.

Math: Understand decimal notation for fractions and compare decimal fractions.

This week, students will be learning more about decimals.  To start off, they will use base-10 block manipulatives to model decimals.  They will then use base-10 blocks and grids to help them read and write decimal numbers to the hundredths place.  Your child will then apply their knowledge of decimals to the context of measurement to write measurements in decimal notation and convert metric units.

Writing: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

Fourth graders will continue writing their final draft opinion piece, which is due November 29.  They will edit and revise their own writing by using an editor’s checklist and incorporating transitional words, as well as a peer’s writing by using TAG (tell a compliment, ask questions, give advice) sheet.
