Peek at the Week

Week of November 13th-17th

 

Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it supported by key details; summarize the text.  

As the fourth graders are reading their biography guided reading book, they will be identifying the main idea supporting it with at least two details.  Ask your fourth grader who they are reading about in their guided reading group.  

 

Writing: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

Writers will focus on a new topic this week about whether or not plastic bags should be banned in stores.  They will again OREO annotate the new article to support them in understanding opinion writing organization.  Skills taught this week will be using appropriate paragraph breaks, having a variety of sentence starters, and incorporating anecdotes to support reasons.  Students can draw connections with this issue due to the plastic bag tax in Chicago–ask your fourth grader about what they think about this topic and their reasons for it.

 

Math: Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

Students will begin the week with the Unit 3 Open Response and Re-Engagement that focuses on using mathematical models to compare fractions.  Fourth graders will then discuss the problems and revise their work.  On Thursday, students will compare fractions in number stories.
