Peek at the Week

Week of October 23rd-27th

Writing: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Throughout the month of October, the fourth graders have been responding to a prompt after reading a passage.  During the last full of week of October, the writers of fourth grade will use the writing skills that they have learned to respond to one last prompt as the final draft of the month.  All of the students will use a rubric to indicate how their writing is being graded.  Skills that will be graded include identifying theme, using text evidence to support the theme, using transitional words, paragraph breaks, beginning sentences with a variety of words, and conventions. To assist with spelling words the correct way, the fourth graders will be using the Internet.  Encourage your fourth grader to use the Internet to spell words correctly at home.  Ask your fourth grader to tell you about their final draft.

Reading: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

The readers of fourth grade will revisit summarizing text.  All of the fourth graders know that a good summary is usually three-five sentences and consists of the who, what, where, why, and when of what was read in the text.  The second book report of the quarter is due on Friday.  Additional copies can be found on the Room 207 blog.

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic; draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

Fourth graders will begin the week converting between different units of time to solve number stories.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, they will interpret and solve multiplicative comparison equations and number stories.  Students will also learn how to classify triangles by their angle properties.
