Peek at the Week

Week of October 10th-13th

Writing: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Once again, the fourth graders will be responding to a writing prompt after reading a passage.  This week, the students will imagine that like the protagonist in the story, they find a pair of wacky shoes that won’t come off.  They will re-write the original story creating characters, setting, and events.  Mini-lessons will focus on beginning a story with a luring lead, using dialogue, and writing with descriptive words.

Reading: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

The fourth graders will continue making inferences in the text.  They will use explicit text evidence to support their inferences.  Please practice making inferences with your fourth grader at home.  The students received a new book report for the next half of the quarter.  This book report will be due on Friday, October 27th.

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operation to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

The fourth graders will begin Unit 2 of math, which is about multiplication and geometry.  On Tuesday, the students will start off the week by reviewing rectangular arrays and exploring patterns in square numbers.  Then, students will develop a formula to solve for areas of rectangles.  Students will also work with factor pairs, arrays, and corresponding equations.
