Peek at the Week

Week of April 24th-28th

Math: Build fractions from unit fractions.

This week, the students will be multiplying fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers.  They will be practicing this through solving word problems.  On Wednesday, they will solve an Open Response problem involving multiplying whole numbers by a fraction in order to create a recipe.  They will spend Thursday critiquing student work and making revisions to their own work.  Multiplying mixed numbers by whole numbers can be difficult.  Please assist your child with homework when necessary.

Reading: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

The students will study the poems of Robert Frost and Langston Hughes.  As they read the poems by these poets, they will identify the theme using specific text evidence in their interpretations.  Ask your fourth grader to identify the theme of the book that he or she is reading at home.

Writing: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

This week we will wrap up our writing unit on poetry. The fourth graders will put all of the information they have learned throughout this unit together, to create a poetry book about one theme. The fourth graders will learn about different ways to go public with their poetry. After that, the fourth graders will write poems about the theme they chose to include in their final poetry book.
