Week of February 6th-10th
Writer’s Workshop: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
To coincide with the reading unit, the fourth graders will be writing their own mysteries. This week, the students will receive a list of mystery vocabulary words to assist in writing their mysteries. They will pick a specific mystery to be solved by a sleuth or detective. The week will be spent brainstorming details for their mysteries. For example, they will draw a picture of their suspects, witness, and sleuth. Along with their illustrations, they will also identify motives and alibis for their suspects, identify a hunch that their sleuth or detective has, and internal characteristics of their witness or witnesses. The writers will end the week with creating a plot mountain of their mysteries before they spend next week drafting their writing.
Math: Build fractions from unit fractions.
This week, the students will be using their fraction circle pieces to solve problems dealing with fractions.The students will learn how to decompose fractions into unit fractions. For example, ¾ = ¼ + ¼ + ¼ . The students will also practice finding a whole when given a fractional part of a region (ex. ⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ = 3/3 or 1 whole). The students will then practice adding fractions of the same whole with like denominators to solve number stories (ex. ⅓ + ⅓ = ⅔). In addition, the students will learn multiple strategies (ex. fraction circles) to add mixed numbers ( ex. 2 ¼ ) with like denominators.
Reading: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.
The students will be introduced to the mystery genre during the third quarter. This week, they will discuss the structure and be able to identify specific characters as a sleuth, witness, or suspect. Character motive and alibi will be used to describe the internal characteristic of the specific character. They will also identify clues and which clues might be a red herring. Every student will be given a mystery to read in his or her guided reading group. Ask your fourth grader to identify which mystery he or she is reading. Because of the new quarters, the students may be sitting in a new continent. Ask your fourth grader to identify which continent he or she is sitting in so that you know when their homework letter is due.
