Peek at the Week

Week of January 23rd-27th

Math:  Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

The fourth grader will use the lattice method of multiplication to multiply multiple digit numbers.  Have your fourth grader demonstrate this method.  On Tuesday, the students will take the Unit 4 Assessment.  Concepts on the test that will be assessed include multiplying multiple digit numbers, solving word problems, converting liters to milliliters, converting kilograms to grams, and finding the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes.  On Wednesday, the fourth graders will take the Cumulative Assessment.  Concepts tested on this assessment include factors, multiples, composite and prime numbers, place value, adding and subtracting multiple digit numbers, area, and parallel lines.  We will spend Thursday correcting the errors on both tests. The students will bring home both tests on Thursday.  Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about either test.

Writing:Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

After spending all of last week researching his or her topic on the Internet, the fourth graders will begin to compose his or her research paper.  They will gather all of their information in an outline format.  From there, they will write the three body paragraphs, the introduction, and conclusion.  All research papers will be due on the last day of the quarter which will be on Thursday, February 2nd.

Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

The fourth grader will begin to write their script for the wax museum.  First, they will complete an outline which they will answer questions about the person’s early and adult life.  They will then compose a summary.  They will also begin to practice the reading of their script with their classmates.  The student’s will end the week with summarizing an informational text passage for the assessment.
