Week of April 1-4

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

We will begin the week with multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Since Monday’s lesson will be the last lesson of Chapter 6, we will take the Unit 6 Test on Wednesday and the Cumulative Test on Thursday. On the Unit 6 Test, the students will be assessed on dividing multiples of hundreds and thousands, dividing a two digit number by a one digit number, solving word problems with division and mixed numbers, finding the perimeter of a rectangle with the given area, identifying angle measure, converting pounds to ounces, and identifying an angle as acute, right, reflex, or obtuse. On Thursday’s Cumulative Test, the students will be assessed on multiplicative comparison statements, identifying factor pairs, knowing the difference between prime and composite numbers, finding area and perimeter, symmetry, comparing fractions with unlike denominators, equivalent fractions, converting fractions to decimals, comparing decimals, converting millimeters to centimeters, hours to minutes, liters to milliliters, seconds to minutes and meters to centimeters, angle measure, adding and subtracting numbers in the ten thousands place, drawing shapes with symmetry, and plotting and using data on a line plot. Please let me know if there are any skills that you would want me to practice with your fourth grader.

Reading: Describe the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part.

The readers will focus on the skill of cause and effect while reading their real life mysteries. They will identify what the effect of the cause of the event was while reading. Ask your fourth grader about the real life mysteries they are reading. Because we are done with the Journeys book, the students will now read stories found in Paths to Discoveries. This week, they will be reading the stories in Lesson 26 and completing the Tic Tac Toe activities.

Writing: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

April is poetry month! To inspire the writers of fourth graders writers to become poets they will be read parts of Poetry Matters by Ralph Fletcher. This week, he will inspire the fourth grade poets to write a poem to a family member, x-ray their emotions, and using imagery.
