Peek at the Week

Week of February 4th-8th

Writing: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

With the new month comes the new writing genre which will be mystery.  The students will be introduced to mystery words such as detective, suspect, witness, and alibi.  From the vocabulary list, they will invent characters that they will use in their mystery. After they form their characters, they will create a plot mountain identifying the mystery, clue, red herring, and breakthrough of the mystery.  Mini-lessons at the end of the week will focus on writing the exposition of the mystery and using description.

Reading: Determine a theme of story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

Just like writing, our reading genre for the month will be mystery.  Every fourth grader will receive a mystery to read in their guided reading group.  As the fourth graders are reading their mysteries, they will be identifying the detective, suspects, and witness of the story.  They will also identify the motive of a witness, if there is a red herring to throw the detective off with a false clue, and if a witness has an alibi.  Ask your fourth grader to summarize his or her mystery.

Math: Learn multiple strategies to add fractions.

Students will start the week off learning how to add mixed fractions by first converting them to improper fractions. They will then tackle adding fractions with different denominators by finding a common denominator. Lastly, the students will end the week with an open response question and discussion that allows them to use their knowledge of adding fractions.
