Peek at the Week

Week of November 5th-9th

Report Card Pick-up

Chicago Public Schools has assigned Wednesday, November 14th as a day for report cards to be distributed at elementary schools.  Every parent has the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher in ten minute increments from 12-6. Please complete the preference sheet to request your preferred time.  Conference times will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

Reading: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject.

During the second quarter, the readers will change genres from fiction to informational text, specifically focusing on biographies.  As each guided reading group finishes their fiction book, they will be given a biography to read. Ask your fourth grader who the subject of his or her biography is.  The reading skill of the week is using context clues to define unfamiliar words. Please practice this reading skill with your fourth grader at home.

Writing: Formulate an opinion on a topic and support that opinion with reasons and specific evidence.

During the month of November, the writers are being introduced to a new genre of writing, opinion writing. The writers will read an opinion piece and discuss it with their classmates. They will then analyze the text to determine reasons for their opinion as well as coming up with some of their own. In order to further convince others of their opinion they will provide specific evidence to support their reasons.

Math: Analyze fractions and determine if they are equivalent using a variety of fraction models.

This week, students will be starting a new unit in mathematics. Unit 3 introduces fractions and has students analyzing fractions in many forms. Students will use fraction circles and number lines, along with equal sharing scenarios to get an understanding of fractions that are equivalent to one another. By the end of the week, students will have a rule to easily determine equivalent fractions when given a fraction.
