Peek at the Week

Week of March 5th-9th

Writing: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

During the month of March, the fourth grade writers will respond to a prompt after reading informational text passages.  This week, they will read two passages about hot air balloons.  In their analysis of the text, they will compare and contrast how the two passages explain the steps to flying and landing hot air balloons. Throughout the week, mini-lessons will focus on the appropriate use of paragraph breaks and using transitional words.

Reading: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text.

Fourth graders will work together in their guided reading groups to develop a mystery skit.  They will develop the skit based on the mystery they have been reading during guided reading.  A rubric will be given out on Monday so students know the expectations for their skit, which they will perform to the class by Friday.

Math: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems; Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic; Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements; Gain familiarity with factors and multiples; Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.

Students will start the week with the Unit 6 Open Response.  On Day 1, they will interpret remainders to solve a problem involving packaging fruit.  On Day 2, they will discuss solutions and explanations of the problem and revise their own work.  Then, students will convert U.S. customary units of weight by converting tons to pounds and pounds to ounces.  Fourth graders will also revisit using partial-quotients division in order to divide whole numbers with 3- and 4-digit dividends.
