New Arrival and Dismissal Procedure Effective Tuesday, January 16th

Dear Ray Families:

The purpose of this new plan to reduce heavy hallway traffic as students enter and exit the building. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

Start Date: Tuesday, January 16, 2018


  • Pre-K students will enter through the glass annex door.
  • Kindergarten will line up outside the auditorium doors.
  • First, Second and Fifth Grades will continue to follow the same procedure.
  • Third & Fourth Grades will enter through the Main Entrance Door.


  • Pre-K students will exit through the glass annex door.
  • Kindergarten will be dismissed outside auditorium doors.
  • First, Second and Fifth Grades will continue to follow the same procedure.
  • Third Grade will exit through the main entrance door and walk to their numbers on the North playground.
  • Fourth Grade will be dismissed from the main entrance door.

Week of January 16th-19th



The fourth graders will take the middle of the year NWEA on Wednesday and Thursday.  The purpose of this assessment is to track progress and to identify areas of enrichment and support for the fourth grade students.  If you would like to see the results of your child’s test, please let me know.  


Math: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.  

Because of the MLK holiday and NWEA assessment, we will only have one formal math lesson this week.  The students will solve multi step multiplication problems and use estimates to assess the reasonableness of their answers.  These problems can be difficult to solve. Before they solve the math problem, the fourth graders are always encouraged to read it three times, they are then supposed to identify what is known in the problem, next they need to identify what they need to solve, finally they need to use perseverance to solve it.  If one of the homework problems is especially difficult to solve, please have your child tell the teacher and we will help him or her.  


Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

Every fourth grader should bring in his or her biography to school on Tuesday, January 16th.  We will begin the week buddy reading our biographies.  The buddy will then complete a graphic organizer identifying the main idea and supporting details of the text.  They will also explain how the details support the main idea.  The buddy will then use the classroom rubric to grade the other student’s graphic organizer and give feedback about the identified main idea, supporting details, and explanation.  Throughout the week, the fourth grader will be engaged in activities pertaining to his or her biography.  As a reminder, every fourth grader will dress as the subject of his or her biography for the Fourth Grade Wax Museum on Thursday, February 1st at 9AM.  Students should start thinking of their costume and prop for the wax museum.  All other work will be done completely in school.  All are welcome to attend this fantastic event!  


Writing: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

The fourth grader writers will use the Internet to research information about their topic pertaining to African-American history.  Ask your fourth grader what he or she is researching.  Throughout the week, the fourth graders will be paraphrasing information and will be discouraged from plagiarizing information.

Homework~ Week of January 15th

This week for homework, read Riding Freedom by Federico Arana.  By Friday, you should complete three tic-tac-toe activities in your homework notebook.  At the top of each page, you should write the date and title of the story.  

Use each vocabulary word on pages 402 and 403 in a sentence.  Each sentence should have at least eight words in it.   Read the Stop and Think on page 413.  As you are reading, identify an example of personification.   Use a Venn Diagram to complete the Stop and Think on page 415.  
Complete the Text to World activity on page 421.  Your response must be written in five or more sentences.   Write a letter to Miss Wejman or Miss Aron about this story.  Your letter must be written in correct format in five or more sentences. Complete the Text to Text activity found on page 421.
Complete the Stop and Think on page 416. You response must be written in five or more sentences. Complete the graphic organizer found on page 405. Answer the essential question in five or more sentences.
