Peek at the Week

Week of November 20th-21st


Reading: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

During this short week, the students will continue to read biographies and focus on the main idea of the text.  They will need to identify two details to support their main idea.  Furthermore, they will specifically indicate how the details support the main idea.  Because of the short week, there will be no homework.  Informational text biographies will be due on Thursday, November 30th.  Students have been encouraged to borrow  a book from our classroom library for this informational text biography.  


Math: Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering; understand decimal notation for fractions and compare decimal fractions.

Fourth graders will discuss strategies for comparing fractions, such as finding a common denominator or using a mathematical model.  This will help them to order fractions accurately on number lines.  Students will also be introduced to the relationship between fractions and decimals by modeling tenths with fraction circles.


Writing: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

Fourth graders will start writing about the final topic of the opinion writing unit, which is whether or not schools should allow cell phones in classrooms.  This week, they will be given the rubric for their final draft, which is due November 29.  Students will also learn more on how to incorporate anecdotes into their opinion writing.
