Week of November 30th– December 4th

 

Science: Engaging in argument from evidence.

After learning about renewable and nonrenewable resources, the geologists of fourth grader will make an educated guess about what type of resource soil is. From there, we will have a class debate. Later in the week, the students will identify reasons of why soil conversation is important. Additionally, the geologists will read about four different monuments and about different careers in geoscience. Ask your fourth grader about which geoscientist job is most interesting to him or her.

 

Math: Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

We will continue to use different strategies to generate equivalent fractions. Strategies include use of the equivalent fraction rule and using our fraction circles. Once we are more secure with finding equivalent fractions, we will compare fractions with both like and unlike denominators. To assist us in comparing fractions with unlike denominators, we will continue to use our fraction circles. Additionally, we will use strategies to plot fractions on a number line and also use the equivalent fraction rule. Later in the week, the students will also be able to identify the relationship between fractions and decimals. Because it is a new month, our Tuesday Timed Test will be focused on division for “Division December.”

 

Social Studies: Describe the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

As the fourth graders continue to read about the Northeast states, they will read to find the cause of effects and effects of the cause. In addition to reading about the New England and Middle Atlantic states, they will also read a biography about Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss. In their reading, they will identify the cause of Dr. Seuss writing the famous children’s book, The Cat in the Hat.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Reading: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

The students will come to guided reading group conversations ready to summarize the plot. From the summary, they will identify the theme of the text. The fourth graders will also be practicing the reading activity of “lifting a line.” They practiced this on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. This activity includes the reader interpreting any line from the text. Their interpretation could be an explanation of an event or character, an inference, an opinion, or a summary. The fourth graders will be practicing this activity in their Bingo Sheets and in their weekly homework letter. To receive a 4 in the reading strategy category in the weekly homework letter, the fourth grader must use the “lifting a line” activity. Please let me know if your fourth grader is having trouble with this activity. I will be happy to practice this activity with your fourth grader.

 

Writing: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

Using Think CERCA this week, the fourth graders will read a biography about Margaret E. Knight, an inventor who lived in the 19th century. As they are reading this biography, they will identify if the biography is written chronologically or in a cause-and-effect relationship. They will use evidence from the text to support their claim.

 

Class Dojo

Starting November 30th, all of the DOJO points received from special teachers will be erased. The students will be awarded (and subtracted) DOJO points in all places (including the homeroom). Students receiving 20 or more points before December 18th will be invited to the incentive party. Today your fourth grader brought home a contract. In order for your child to be invited to the incentive party, he or she must bring back the signed contract to school and receive 20 points. If you have any questions about your child’s DOJO points or about the incentive party, please let me know.
