Miss Wejman’s

Peek at the Week

Week of November 9th-12th

Science: Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

The geologists will continue to learn about volcanoes. This week, they will focus on Mount St. Helens. They will create a profile map from a topographic map of Mount St. Helens. In creating them, they will identify how the volcano eruption changed the terrain. They will also view a video of the eruption.

Math: Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.

Because this week is the last week of the quarter, we will take the cumulative test on Tuesday. Concepts on the test include place value, comparing and adding numbers, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, finding the perimeter of a square, and solving word problems. On Thursday, we will review the test and correct our errors so that we are ready to begin Unit 3 next week. There will be no formal math homework assigned this week.

Social Studies: Describe the overall structure of events in a text or part of a text.

As we will continue to learn about the Northeast region, we will be reading to find both the cause and effect in the text. We will begin by looking at how both glaciers and blizzards have affected the Northeast. We will also be reading to find the cause of historical events. The fourth graders will also be able to identify how water helped with the growth of the Northeast.

Reading: Describe in depth a character, setting or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (character’s thoughts, words, or actions).

The students will continue to define the protagonist of their guided reading book with a specific character trait. They will use the character’s thoughts, words, or actions as text evidence to support the assigned trait.

Writing: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by panning, revising, and editing.

The writers of fourth grade will continue to publish their informational books. All parents are invited to attend our publishing party on Thursday, November 12th at 845 AM.

Students will be given preferred times on a first come, first serve basis. I will complete the form and give you your assigned time based on your preferences. Please email me with any questions, comments, or concerns. I look forward to meeting with you regarding your child’s progress in the first quarter of fourth grade.
