Peek at the Week

February 28th-March 4th

Reader’s Workshop

The students will continue to be explicitly taught reading strategies that will be assessed on the ISAT. This week’s strategies include more literary elements. On Monday, the students will take a test. For homework, they are to make up the missed questions and turn it in by the end of the week with an adult’s signature. Late homework will not be accepted. Thank you for your cooperation regarding ISAT preparation.

Writer’s Workshop

The students will continue to practice responding to the ISAT extended response questions. The students have been taught that in order to score a four they must include text evidence with their own explanation, interpretation, and connection. This week, the students will be given writing samples from other students to grade. They will then find out the grade that was given to them from using the ISAT rubric.

They are also encouraged to help the students with corrections to help in the process of ISAT preparation.

Week of February 14th-18th

Reader’s Workshop

We will continue our ISAT routine with a practice ISAT test on Monday. The students will receive the test back and have the opportunity to make the corrections on the test before Friday. The test must have an adult signature on it for it to be accepted as a new grade. The reading strategies that will be taught this week include fact and opinion, cause and effect, genre, and sequencing of events.

Writer’s Workshop

The students will continue to write the answers to extended response questions. As the students are responding, they are encouraged to find specific evidence in the text that answers the question. To get the highest score, they must include at least two sentences of interpretation to support their evidence. We will be practicing using the extended response rubric to grade our writing.

5th and 6th Grade Reader’s Workshop

The readers of fifth and sixth grade will continue to use the ISAT Coach book to practice comprehension reading strategies. Once again, the students will take a pre-test on Monday. After the students receive it back graded, they will be responsible for making the corrections and having a parent sign it. The new grade will replace the old grade.

5th and 6th Grade Writer’s Workshop

The students will continue to use graphic organizers to gather their thoughts when responding to extended response questions. When a student is answering an extended response question, it is essential that students back up the evidence from the text with their own interpretation and analysis. They will also be introduced to the extended response rubric to know what they need to do to get the highest possible grade.
